Investigating sources, driving forces, and potential health risk of nitrate in groundwater for safe water supply

Environmental concerns and public health issues related to the interaction between municipal solid waste leachate and groundwater have become increasingly urgent. To assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, this study analyzed the hydrogeochemical variables of 35 groundwater samples from a landfill site in Lahijan City, located in northern Iran. In addition to human health risk assessment indices, the study considered the leachate pollution index, landfill water pollution index, and nitrate pollution index (NPI) to evaluate drinking water quality. The NPI values indicated that 23% of the samples were of acceptable quality in the wet season, and 77% in the dry season, with the remaining samples showing low pollution due to high nitrate concentrations in the groundwater. Overall, the results identified nitrate, caused by the landfill, as a significant pollutant in the area, prompting a health risk assessment based on the NPI. The analysis of non-carcinogenic risks revealed that approximately 73% of the samples posed negative health effects during the wet season, making the water unsuitable for infants and 20% were inappropriate for children. In the dry season, this value was 25% for children. The carcinogenic risk assessment showed that 65% of the samples were unsuitable for infants in the wet season and 18% in the dry season. These findings highlight the urgent need for measures such as regular water inspections, health check-ups, and the implementing of common water treatment plants in rural areas to mitigate the adverse effects of nitrate-contaminated drinking water.
