<p>The study focused on the expressway slopes in the mountainous areas of southern Shaanxi, China. We employed a combination of field surveys and community investigations to examine the characteristics of artificial vegetation communities on slopes with varying years of cultivation (2a, 5a, 8a and 10a). Significant differences were observed in the vegetation communities across different restoration ages. During the early stages of vegetation recovery, the dominant species were primarily those from artificial seeding, resulting in low community diversity. As the restoration progressed, native species gradually increased, enriching species composition and raising the diversity index. However, as succession continued, the community became dominated by a few species, leading to a decrease in the diversity index. With improvements in the slope vegetation-soil system, native plants from families such as <i>Poaceae</i>, <i>Fabaceae</i>, and <i>Asteraceae</i> began to restructure the artificial vegetation community, occupying a larger proportion of the space. In the later stages of succession, woody plants began to take up more space in the community. The naturalized succession process of artificial vegetation on the expressway slopes in southern Shaanxi can be divided into three stages: the artificial grass and shrub community stage (1 ~ 2a), the coexistence stage of artificial and natural plants (2 ~ 8a), and the tree, shrub, and grass community stage (8 ~ 10a).</p>
