Spatial distribution of air pollutants in different urban functional zones based on mobile monitoring and CFD simulation

Examining the spatial distribution of air pollutants across urban functional areas helps to identify pollution hotspots, evaluate the impact of air pollution, and provide a scientific basis for developing pollution control strategies, protecting public health, and improving air quality. This study utilized mobile observations and CFD simulations to analyze the distribution of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, NO2, and O3 and their interactions with microclimatic factors across four functional areas in Shenyang: commercial, residential, green, and transportation zones. The results showed that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in residential and green zones were significantly higher than in transportation and commercial zones. SO2 concentrations in the residential zone were 30.04 ± 0.20 μg/m3, which was significantly higher than in the transportation and green zones, and significantly higher than in the commercial zone. The highest concentrations of both NO2 and O3 were observed in the commercial zone, with values of 57.00 ± 0.64 μg/m3 and 182.06 ± 1.80 μg/m3, respectively. No significant differences were found in CO concentrations among the four functional zones, but higher concentrations were observed at or near intersections.
