Advancements in bamboo preservative solutions for sustainable construction in Brazil

The global environmental impact of the civil construction industry has spurred the search for sustainable materials. Bamboo, an abundant raw material in tropical regions, offers economic viability and diverse construction applications while sequestering substantial carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, South American bamboo plants lack extensive study and recognition compared with their Asian counterparts. Brazil has shown a growing interest in bamboo, increasing scientific production, publishing standards for its use, and in preservative treatments using aqueous disodium octaborate tetrahydrate. To comply with Brazilian standards and reduce production costs, was obtained a predictive model for electrical conductivity measured in solutions with varying levels of disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, copper sulfate, and water sources. The model had a 97.9% correlation between the explained variable, electrical conductivity, and its predictor, the disodium octaborate tetrahydrate level. Its use may foster prototype development that may monitor preservative solutions, permitting reduced costs in bamboo production. Consequently, it may foster sustainable bamboo production and support the environmental goals of the country’s construction industry.
