Spatio-temporal evolution of landscape patterns and characterization of shrinkage of rural settlements in mountainous urban agglomerations–taking Chongqing urban agglomeration as an example

Rapid urbanization in China has significantly altered rural communities and landscape patterns in mountainous urban agglomerations. This study analyzes the spatio-temporal evolution of rural settlements in the Chongqing urban agglomeration utilizing land use and geospatial data from 2000 to 2018, applying landscape and spatial statistical methods. The results demonstrates that although the number of rural settlements slightly increased from approximately 1.5 million to 1.67 million between 2009 and 2018, the total patch area contracted from 362,480.57 hectares to 353,792.35 hectares, indicating fragmentation and scale reduction. The Mean Proximity Index (MPI) remained below 1, reflecting a clustered settlement pattern that gradually dispersed toward peripheral areas. Kernel density estimation revealed an increase in high-density settlement zones from 59 to 66 units per square kilometre, with rural settlements predominantly composed of micro-patches exhibiting a “less patchy, more sporadic” morphology. This study further explores the dynamic distribution of production, living, and ecological spaces and provides insights for sustainable land use planning and spatial optimization in mountainous urban agglomerations.
