SummaryDepressive disorders are a common health condition affecting older adults. Depression in older adults is important to recognize and treat as it impacts both quality of life and mortality. Managing geriatric depression offers unique challenges compared to treating other adults with depression including reduced efficacy of medications as well as the tendency for older adults to experience polypharmacy and adverse effects from medications. Nonpharmacologic interventions such as exercise and psychotherapy, antidepressant medications, and interventional therapies such as electroconvulsive therapy are some of the tools used to manage depression in older adults. Understanding the complexities of diagnosing and managing late life depression has the potential to improve outcomes and quality of life for our older adult patients.
