Purpose of Review <p>Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions among older adults in the United States with 29% of adults 65&#xa0;years or older having this condition. As diabetes progresses, patients can experience a multitude of complications, with peripheral neuropathy being one of the most common complications of diabetes. The development of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and its subsequent progression have a strong correlation to duration of diabetes and glycemic control. Given the impact that aging can have on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug metabolism, potentially leading to important safety concerns for older adults, it is important to assess the safety profiles of the medications that they utilize.</p> Recent Findings <p>This review was conducted to help demonstrate the potential safety concerns for geriatric patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy utilizing medications to treat their condition, as a way to help promote patient safety and better care. This review discusses the treatment options available for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, the efficacy of the available treatment options for the symptoms they are intended to treat, and the recommendations of available treatment guidelines. This review then goes in-depth on the potential safety concerns of the available treatment options for the geriatric population.</p> Summary <p>Most of the medications currently available for treating painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy have clinically significant safety concerns, which may lead to worsened outcomes for patients. Clinicians need to weigh the risks versus benefits of the different pharmacologic options for geriatric patients to help ensure the best possible outcomes.</p>
