Sesame seed meal (SSM), the by-product from sesame oil production, contains high amounts of bioactive compounds such as lignans, dietary fiber, and proteins. Increasing demand for functional foods and nutraceuticals for health enhancement has inspired an upturn in research exploring novel sources of natural, safe, and effective bioactive components. This is an up-to-date and comprehensive review of SSM, focusing on the role of its proteins/peptides in modulating physiological processes in the light of potential health improvement.
Recent FindingsMounting evidence from in vitro, in vivo and some clinical studies, suggest that SSM proteins and bioactive peptides interacted with, and effectively modulated vital molecular targets, metabolism, and physiological processes central to the pathogenesis of some chronic ailments. These include nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 pathway activation, regulation of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and metabolic enzymes, inhibition of aberrant protein aggregation, boosting antioxidant status, countering oxidative stress, modulating blood lipid levels, etc., resulting in anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-hyperlipidemia, and neuroprotective effects.
