摘要

In the present study, TIG welding of 6063 aluminum alloy in T4 condition is performed using filler 4043 alloy. Radiography revealed no visible defects in the joint. The alloy was converted from T4 to T6 condition via heat treatment. The base metal microstructure in the T4 condition exhibits polygonal α grains, whereas the fusion zone shows equiaxed dendritic grains, interspersed with columnar dendrites extending from the boundary to the centerline. A narrow (∼200 µm) transition zone exhibits a fibrous microstructure and fine equiaxed grains. The hardness in the joint (HRF 32) in the T6 condition is almost half of the base metal (HRF 67). The hardness increases from the welded zone toward the base metal, creating a ‘U’ shape profile. The tensile properties of the joint significantly decreased compared to the base metal. Fractography revealed mixed quasi-cleavage and dimple features. Finally, a correlation of mechanical properties and applications is made.
