Een dubbel J-katheter zonder aanvullende interventie als definitieve behandeling van acute symptomatische kleine ureterstenen: ervaringen uit het Catharina Ziekenhuis in Eindhoven

In an acute setting, double‑J catheters (DJ) are often inserted for the treatment of symptomatic obstructive ureter stone. Usually, this is followed by a definitive treatment with ureteroscopy or shockwave lithotripsy. The purpose of this retrospective study is to investigate whether a DJ is an effective and safe definitive treatment option for small ureteral stones. 23 patients from the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven were included. All patients successfully passed their ureteral stones, in 43% with the DJ in situ and in 57% after DJ removal. The average maximum stone size was 3.23 mm. In 1 patient a re-admission was necessary after removal of DJ because of unsustainable pain, no further significant complications were recorded. This study shows that a DJ placed in an acute setting for small symptomatic ureteral stones, can be a safe and effective definitive treatment option without additional intervention.
