Inter-group variation of floral scent composition in two Hedychium groups (Zingiberaceae)

The floral scent is a key characteristic of the Hedychium species, which varies among different species. Previous studies indicated that Chinese Hedychium species were divided into six groups based on morphological traits. However, until now, variations in floral scent among different Hedychium groups have not been reported. In this study, we investigated the inter-group variation in floral scent composition using 10 Hedychium species from two groups: the H. coronarium group and the H. coccineum group. Floral scent was collected using static headspace and headspace solid-phase microextraction (SHS-HS-SPME) sampling techniques and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results of GC-MS analysis revealed that the H. coronarium group generally showed higher total volatile emissions than the H. coccineum group. Alkenes and alcohols were both the most abundant components in the H. coronarium group, whereas the H. coccineum group was predominantly composed of alkenes. Eucalyptol, ocimene, β-cis-ocimene, and linalool were the four compounds with high emissions in some species. In addition, the linalool had higher emissions in all species of the H. coronarium group compared to the H. coccineum group. The heatmap of volatile composition emissions further illustrated that the 10 Hedychium species were classified into two distinct clusters, which were consistent with the morphological grouping. Furthermore, the result of the PLS-DA analysis also indicated that the H. coronarium group and the H. coccineum group were separated entirely, and 18 potential volatile composition biomarkers were selected. These results showed that the H. coccineum and the H. coronarium groups had variations in floral scent emissions suggesting that floral scent may serve as a crucial characteristic within the Hedychium genus.
