<p>Phonolite rocks stand out as geological materials with promising potential valorization in several economic sectors. They are used as dimension stone, aggregates, potassium-rich agricultural fertilizer and they serve as raw material for various manufacturing. Phonolites outcrop extensively in the volcanic province of Gharyan in northwestern Libya. Their huge reserves, easy access and seemly easy operating make them primary target for industrial valorization. This study presents an integrated approach aiming to evaluate the suitability of these rocks for potential industrial uses. It involves physicochemical, petrographic and mineralogical characterization of samples gathered from the main exposed phonolitic domes based on XRD technique, chemical analyses and petrographic thin sections. GIS techniques were used for mapping the studied phonolitic bodies and estimating, non-exhaustively, their reserves based on aerial orthophotos and topographic data from digital elevation model. In addition, Los Angeles abrasion and Micro-Deval tests were performed to assess the durability of aggregates prepared from some selected samples. It was found that the Gharyan phonolites represent valuable raw materials suitable for numerous industrial applications including ceramic manufacturing, agriculture, aggregates and all types of concrete in addition to construction and diverse artisanal local applications. This study contributes to a better physicochemical identification of Gharyan phonolites and encourages its industrial applications.</p>
