Between a rock and a hard place: the Social Acceptability of the Mary River mining project in Nunavut

This paper critically examines the Mary River Iron Ore mining project in Nunavut’s Qikiqtani region. Despite support from the government and Inuit organizations, the project faced opposition from local communities, culminating in a blockade. The study explores the concept of ‘Social acceptability’ in resource development and its application within this context. It analyzes the project’s impact on local communities, focusing on the authorization process, public hearings, and the role of Inuit organizations. This research integrates diverse sources, including public records, local media, and informal discussions with Nunavummiut, offering a comprehensive view of the complexities and conflicts surrounding the project’s development.
