The carcinogenic risks of military explosives: mechanisms, health impacts, and environmental consequences of chemical munitions

Chemical explosives used in military operations possess cytotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic properties, with their impact dependent on exposure duration, quantity, and route of entry. Despite their widespread use, the connection between exposure to these explosives and cancer risk is an underexplored public health concern. This review evaluates the carcinogenic potential of commonly used explosives, including TNT, RDX, HMX, and DNT, focusing on their genotoxic and toxicological effects. These chemicals are linked to severe health conditions, such as liver toxicity, neurological disorders, and blood malignancies, with varying degrees of evidence supporting their carcinogenicity in humans and animals. The study delves into the biological mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis, examining how these explosives initiate and promote tumour development. TNT and DNT, in particular, exhibit strong carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, while evidence for RDX and HMX is less conclusive, based largely on animal research. The findings highlight the pressing need for further epidemiological studies and toxicological assessments to better understand these risks. In addition to advocating for enhanced protective measures for military personnel and civilians, the review stresses the importance of environmental remediation strategies to reduce long-term health hazards associated with explosive contaminants. Overall, this study provides insights into the carcinogenic risks posed by military munitions and underscores the need for continued research to elucidate their role in cancer development.
