Intersecting climate data with farmer’s gendered perceptions on climate variability in Uganda’s cattle corridor

Gendered adaptation to climate variability is greatly affected by how risks are perceived and how both women and men experience impacts. However, there is a lack of information on gendered perceptions validated with climate data. In Uganda’s agro-pastoral corridor, we used a cross-sectional survey with 1106 household interviews to explore gendered perspectives on climate changes and how these corroborate with climate data. We also determined the socio-economic factors that influenced these perceptions. Results revealed no significant trends in the maximum, minimum, or mean annual temperature and annual rainfall trends. However, Rakai’s MAM and Nabilatuk’s SON seasonal rainfall showed significant increasing trends. Both genders observed climate changes, but there were notable differences in their perceptions. Factors such as remittances, health, access to information, water, and agricultural inputs significantly influenced men’s perceptions of climate. In contrast, women’s perceptions were influenced by age, education, health, land tenure security, household decision-making roles, livelihood diversity, and access to agricultural tools and inputs. Our study highlights significant gender-based differences in the factors influencing perceptions of climate, with women identifying more factors than men. Therefore, to promote equitable adaptation to uncertain climate changes, it is crucial to empower women, who constitute the majority of the farm labor force in the global south, to improve sustainability of livelihood.
