摘要

Background

Sarcopenia is a condition with loss of muscle mass and strength which is associated with multiple metabolic problems, frailty, impaired quality of life and death. It can also be found in a younger age group with a chronic condition.

Objective

Sarcopenia in women, diagnostic criteria and its management were discussed in this paper.

Methods

A literature review was conducted by searching for literature in NCBI, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer etc. using MeSH keywords from inception to date. We additionally searched for trials and studies for treating sarcopenia in women. Subsequently, we have reviewed the results narratively.

Results

Sarcopenia can be found in more than half of the women with PCOS. The prevalence increases with age. The etiopathogenesis of sarcopenia is multifactorial. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation related to underlying systemic illness and menopause play a major role. It is important to timely identify and treat secondary causes. Although osteoporosis and sarcopenia frequently co-exist in women, sarcopenia may also contribute to bone health deterioration, and hence, identification and treatment of sarcopenia are important, especially in the elderly population. Management mainly focuses on a high-protein diet and resistance training. The role of drugs remains controversial.

Conclusion

Sarcopenia in women is a preventable condition. It is important to timely identify and treat secondary causes. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent major disability. Further research is necessary to elucidate mechanisms linking sarcopenia with PCOS.
