Background <p>People with young-onset diabetes comprise a heterogeneous group, with etiologies including classic type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus, pancreatic diabetes and the rarer maturity-onset diabetes of young (MODY) and some remain unclassified.</p> Objective <p>The present study was planned to study the clinical characteristics, presentation &amp; progression of those with young onset diabetes &amp; to classify them into existing diabetes subtypes and identify the heterogeneity within.</p> Methods <p>The present study was conducted on 89 subjects with diabetes onset between 6 months to 30 years of age. Subjects were classified into preexisting diabetes types, while the rest were labeled as unclassified.</p> Results <p>The commonest type of diabetes was type 1 (52%), followed by type 2 (22.5%), pancreatic diabetes (9%) and MODY (3.4%). Twelve (13.48%) subjects remained unclassified. Fifteen percent of subjects among type 1 were found to be insulin resistant and 45% among type 2 were insulin sensitive. Unclassified group had mixed patterns.</p> Conclusion <p>The varied clinical presentation and disease progression underscores the need for a more appropriate classification of diabetes in a clinical setting so as to decide on optimal modes of treatment and follow- up.</p>

Background

Objective
