Relationship between dietary inflammatory index and predominant intestinal bacterial phylum in healthy pregnant women compared to gestational diabetes

In the present study, the levels of four predominant gut bacterial phyla were compared between pregnant with gestational diabetes and healthy mothers and their relationship with the dietary inflammatory index was investigated.
MethodsTwenty pregnant women with diabetes diagnosed at 24–28 weeks of pregnancy based on glucose tolerance test and 40 healthy pregnant women with normal glucose results were selected. Stool samples were collected to assess the four phyla including Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Bacterial DNA was extracted and 16S rRNA gene amplification was performed by qPCR using universal bacterial primers. Dietary information was collected using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and the dietary inflammatory index, adjusted for energy, was calculated.
ResultsThe dietary inflammatory index was significantly higher in women with gestational diabetes than the healthy (p = 0.02). The intestinal Actinobacteria population showed a significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.04). An inverse correlation was observed between fasting (p = 0.04) and 1-h (p = 0.01) blood glucose with Actinobacteria population. Height showed a significant effect on the population of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes (OR = 0.36, p = 0.007, 95%CI = 0.017, 0.02 and OR = 0.23, 95%CI = 0.04, 0.004, p = 0.04).
ConclusionsIncreased fasting and 1-h blood sugar levels were associated with a decrease in the population of intestinal Actinobacteria, a beneficial phylum, in the studied population. Height was identified as an effective factor on the population of intestinal pathogens, which requires more extensive studies in this field. No statistically significant relationship was observed between the dietary inflammatory index and the studied phyla.
