Correlation of hs-CRP with glycemic control and microvascular complications in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus

C-reactive protein and glycated haemoglobin are proven risk factors for the onset of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The hs-CRP levels correlate with the severity of components of metabolic syndrome and also forecast vascular complications in people who already have severe insulin resistance. Less is known about whether hs-CRP in people with diabetes is related to level of glycaemic control.
ObjectiveOur study aimed to find the correlation of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
MethodsThe observational cross-sectional study included 100 adult patients with T2DM as per the American Diabetes Association criteria. Their examination Routine blood tests, hs-CRP, HbA1c, FBS, and PPBS investigations were conducted. The data analysis was done by using appropriate statistical tests.
ResultsThe study found that 32% had diabetic neuropathy, 42% had diabetic retinopathy, and 27% had diabetic nephropathy out of 100 patients. The distribution of hs-CRP varied over duration and age of diabetes, with a high positive correlation with HbA1c and fasting and post-prandial blood sugar. Fasting and post-prandial blood sugar significantly impacted hs-CRP, and it was also found to be significantly associated with microvascular complications of diabetes (p-value < 0.001).
ConclusionThe study concludes that there is a positive correlation between the level of hs-CRP with diabetes and supports the role of inflammation in etiology of diabetes and its microvascular complications. Hence, raised levels of hs-CRP indicate ongoing inflammation in T2DM.
