Background <p>Physical activity&#xa0;(PA) plays a major role in self-management of diabetes. Many individuals with diabetes were physically inactive, and gender differences were unclear on the barriers of PA.</p> Objective <p>We aimed to assess the level of PA and identify the barriers for being physically active among people with diabetes.</p> Methods <p>A cross-sectional study was conducted among 312 participants in a tertiary care center for diabetes in South India. PA level was assessed using GPAQ. Barriers to PA were assessed using BBAQ.</p> Results <p>Median age of the participants was 50&#xa0;years. Around 52.9% of them were physically inactive. Physical inactivity was significantly associated with gender, occupation, glycemic control, and lipid profile (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). The participants spent an average of 5.5&#xa0;h per day on sedentary behavior. The commonly perceived barriers for PA were lack of time, lack of energy, and lack of will power with significant gender differences (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05).</p> Conclusion <p>Nearly 50% of them were physically inactive. Lack of time and will power among males and lack of energy in females were the barriers for being physically active. High proportion of males was doing moderate work and recreational activities compared to females. Strategies should be implemented to improve the PA among women.</p>

Background
