Analysis of correlation between serum homocysteine level and hepatic steatosis in physical examination population

This study aims to evaluate hepatic steatosis by control attenuation parameter (CAP) and to investigate the correlation between serum homocysteine (Hcy) level and CAP.
MethodsA total of 1422 subjects with CAP, measured at the physical examination center of Hebei General Hospital from August 2017 to July 2019, were included. Fasting blood was collected, and the serum levels of Hcy, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), triglycerides (TG), total bilirubin (TBil), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and fasting blood sugar (FBS) were measured. The correlation between the above biochemical criteria and CAP was analyzed.
ResultsCAP was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI, r = 0.389, p < 0.001), Hcy (r = 0.247, p < 0.001), TC (r = 0.589, p < 0.001), TG (r = 0.433, p < 0.001), LDL-C (r = 0.515, p < 0.001), ALT (r = 0. 287, p < 0.001), AST (r = 0.195, p < 0.001), GGT (r = 0.303, p < 0.001), FBS (r = 0.324, p < 0.001) in men. CAP was positively correlated with age (r = 0.402, p < 0.001), BMI (r = 0.345, p < 0.001), Hcy (r = 0.217, p = 0.001), TC (r = 0.514, p < 0.001), TG (r = 0.446, p < 0.001), LDL-C (r = 0.532, p < 0.001), ALT (r = 0. 304, p < 0.001), AST (r = 0.248, p < 0.001), GGT (r = 0.278, p < 0.001), and FBS (r = 0.491, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with HDL-C (r = − 0.182, P = 0.005) in women.
ConclusionSerum Hcy level is positively correlated with CAP in both male and female; increased serum Hcy level is an independent risk factor for hepatic steatosis.
