Hypertension among reproductive women in India: A study of interaction between tobacco and diabetes
摘要
Evidence is limited regarding the association of tobacco consumption and diabetes among women of reproductive age with hypertension. One of the main risk factors for female global mortality is high blood pressure.
ObjectiveWe aimed to investigate the risk of hypertension and its interaction between tobacco and diabetes.
MethodsThe National Family Health Survey (2019–2021) data was used to meet the study aim. The nationally representative sample of 695,707 women was analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multiple logistic regression techniques.
ResultIn India, the prevalence of hypertension is 13.3% among reproductive women. Of those women who consume tobacco and have increased blood glucose levels among them, 28.3% are hypertensive. The adjusted odds ratios indicated that, after controlling for significant background factors, women who consumed tobacco and had increased BGL (OR = 1.64, CI = 1.36–1.99, < 0.05) had higher odds of suffering from hypertension compared to their counterparts. Similarly, for those women who consume tobacco but have not increased BGL the odds of having hypertension are higher (OR = 1.12, CI = 1.03–1.21, < 0.05) than the reference group.
ConclusionThe finding suggests the interaction of tobacco consumption and increased blood glucose levels on hypertension is significant, which will help in better engagement with health services in health management.
