Extraction and characterization of new fibre from Phalsa plant and conversion into nonwoven fabric

The demand for frequent irrigation in cotton crops compelled researchers to explore some alternate cellulosic fibre to fulfil the demand for cotton in traditional and technical textile fields. Phalsa (Grewia asiatica L., Tiliaceae) is an exotic shrub plant that is cultivated as a fruit crop and the stem of the plant is considered agriculture waste. The primary goal of the present study is to utilize the Phalsa shrub stem for fibre extraction and further convert it into non-woven fabric structure. In order to achieve optimal retting of Phalsa fibre, the alkaline retting bath was opted to separate out the lignin and other non-cellulosic materials. The retting conditions were discussed to optimize strength loss and maximum fibre yield. The mean diameter and fibre linear density of the retted single Phalsa fibre were 111 μm and 14 tex, respectively. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) results verified the suitability of fibre surface for subsequent textile processes following the effective removal of lignin. The Phalsa fibre was converted into needle punch non-woven fabric after blending with jute fibre by keeping the blend ratio of 50:50 jute to Phalsa.
