Bamboo biochar: a multifunctional material for environmental sustainability

Bamboo biochar is increasingly recognized as a highly adaptable material with significant potential for various environmental applications, owing to its distinctive properties and environmentally friendly production methods. As bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants, it serves as an excellent renewable feedstock for biochar, a carbon-rich product obtained through pyrolysis. This review comprehensively analysis the properties, production methods, physicochemical properties, and diverse environmental applications of bamboo biochar. In the context of soil amendment, bamboo biochar enhances soil fertility, aids in carbon sequestration, and improves crop yields. Its role in water treatment is highlighted by its effectiveness in adsorbing heavy metals and other pollutants, thereby improving water quality. Bamboo biochar also shows potential in air quality improvement by capturing greenhouse gases and volatile organic compounds. Its use in climate change mitigation and waste management presents opportunities for reducing carbon footprints and managing organic waste sustainably. The process of producing and utilizing bamboo biochar has challenges despite its many benefits. Economic feasibility, potential environmental risks, and technical limitations need to be addressed to realize its full potential. This review also identifies future research directions, including innovations in production technology and exploration of new applications. Bamboo biochar stands out as a multifunctional material that can significantly contribute to environmental sustainability.
