Phyto-fabrication of gold nanoparticles using Toona sureni (Blume) Merr. leaves extract: characterization and assessment of their antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxicity activities

Nanotechnology has advanced rapidly, but conventional methods for nanoparticle synthesis often involve hazardous chemicals and high energy consumption, posing environmental concerns. To address this, green synthesis utilizing phytochemicals offers a sustainable alternative. This study demonstrates the eco-friendly synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using ethanol extract from Toona sureni leaves. The synthesized AuNPs were characterized using UV–Vis spectroscopy, particle size analysis, zeta potential, FT-IR, EDX, XRD, and TEM. Biologically, the AuNPs exhibited antibacterial activity against MRSA, P. acnes, P. aeruginosa, and S. epidermidis, anti-inflammatory potential, strong antioxidant activity, moderate cytotoxicity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells, and low toxicity on brine shrimp larvae. These findings highlight the potential of T. sureni in the phyto-fabrication of AuNPs for biomedical applications, although further studies are needed for therapeutic validation.
