Synthesis of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Nanorods for the Re-mediation of Congo Red Dye from Aqueous Solution
摘要
Herein, we report the synthesis of magnesium oxide nanorods (MgO NRs) by using magnesium chloride as Mg source whereas cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant. The effect of absence and presence of CTAB on the morphology of the prepared MgO was studied. The synthesized MgO was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction; PXRD, scanning-electron microscopy; SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray; and EDX spectroscopy to examine their crystallinity, phase purity and morphological properties. The SEM studies suggested that MgO has rods-like surface morphology. The specific surface area of the MgO NRs was determined by employing Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. The MgO NRs exhibited the reasonably good specific surface area of 65.79 m2/g. Furthermore, MgO NRs were adopted as adsorbent for the removal of congo red (CR) dye from the aqueous solution under different pH conditions. The MgO NRs exhibited excellent adsorption efficiency of 98.16% with good adsorption capacity (750 mg g−1) at pH 2.0. However, MgO NRs showed low adsorption activity in basic medium. The synthesized MgO NRs also exhibited good reusability up to four cycles and stability which offers its potential applications in large-scale CR dye removal applications. In addition, MgO NRs were also used as adsorbent for methyl orange (MO) adsorption which showed adsorption efficiency of 91.5% at pH 8.0.
