Impact of Rate of Soiling and Partial Shading on the Performance of Polycrystalline Si Solar PV Modules Under Variable Irradiation

The accumulation of dust and partial shading on the PV panel surface adversely affects the performance of the solar PV system in terms of power, loss, and efficiency. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the performance of solar panels under soiling and partial shading conditions. Based on the data available, a partial shading effect has been observed for clean and dusty panels. Energy yield, solar irradiance, and ambient temperature were monitored at weekly intervals in a real-time scenario on a solar PV panel in the arid environment of Pune, India. Here, the effect of dust deposition on the output power, power loss, efficiency, soiling impact factor, fill factor, and CO₂ emission of the PV modules was comprehensively investigated, in particular, focusing on the level of dust deposition. Performance analysis with three different cases of partial shading on both soiled and clean panels is also carried out. The impact of soiling on energy efficiency, CO2 emission, and performance index is discussed. It is also observed that cleaning panels consistently lowers CO2 emissions and boosts performance index, with the performance gap widening as efficiency increases, peaking at an 8.1 kWh/m2 advantage for cleaned panels at 93% efficiency.
