Update and classification of feeding habits of armadillos (Xenarthra, cingulata): A 40-year review
摘要
Numerous studies have investigated the dietary habits of armadillos, yet the most comprehensive review and classification was conducted nearly 40 years ago. Substantial subsequent research has emerged, but it often uses dietary classifications that create ambiguity. In light of the intervening decades, this study seeks to update existing knowledge, standardise item classifications, and delineate priorities for future research. Drawing from an exhaustive literature survey, we furnish detailed dietary profiles and quantitative data on item proportions for nine species: Chaetophractus villosus,C. vellerosus,Dasypus pilosus,D. novemcinctus,D. septemcinctus,Euphractus sexcinctus,Priodontes maximus,Tolypeutes matacus, and Zaedyus pichiy. Nutritional compositions of prey items are depicted using ternary plots. By integrating both proportional dietary contributions and nutrient profiles, the focal species cluster into three categories: omnivores, insectivore-omnivores, and animalivores. This revised categorisation refines our understanding of armadillo trophic ecology, moving beyond traditional, less nuanced classifications.
