On Linguistic Understanding and the Scope of the Debate: A Reply
摘要
This reply welcomes Ballouk and Altinawi’s engagement with my account oflinguistic understanding while clarifying the scope of the original project. Thecentral issue, I argue, is not simply whether current AI systems should be praisedor criticized in general, but how linguistic understanding itself ought to beanalyzed. The commentary is most productive when read as reinforcing the claimthat understanding is situated, layered, and context-sensitive. At the same time, the conceptual analysis of understanding should be distinguished from broaderethical and political assessments of AI. A more adequate account of linguisticunderstanding helps not only to classify cases more carefully, but also to correctrecurrent misunderstandings in debates about AI.
