<p>This introduction to the topical collection on trust and opacity in artificial intelligence briefly examines the significance of these notions and highlights key points of controversy surrounding them in contemporary philosophical debates. It then identifies four thematic domains within which the contributions in this collection can be situated: (i) foundational and conceptual prerequisites, (ii) ethical challenges, (iii) epistemological concerns, and (iv) perspectives relating to cultural, social, and political contexts. Finally, it summarizes how the individual contributions address these issues.</p>
