<p>Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC), a rare and uncommon jawbone cyst of odontogenic origin has a potentially aggressive behavior and relatively high recurrence rate. The importance of this lesion relates to the fact that along with a high recurrence rate it also shares overlapping histologic features with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC). Comprehensive research is the need of the hour to identify the molecular markers specific for MEC and GOC. Thus, this present case series describes cases of GOC and that of MEC comparing their clinic-pathologic characteristics along with immuno-histochemical expression of various markers. Six diagnosed cases of GOC and three cases of different grades of MEC were retrieved from the archives. Their clinical, radiological and histopathological findings along with their follow-up parameters were compiled into tabulated form and the immunohistochemical expression of Ki67, MCM3, MUC1 and MUCA5 in each of these was studied and then compared to establish a criterion for diagnosis. Ki67, marker of proliferative activity, has been reported to have highest mean proliferative index in cases of GOC whilst least has been observed for MCM3. MCM3 showed highest expression for MEC whereas MUC1, MUC5AC showed least mean proliferative index, which although were not found to be statistically significant. Comprehensive research is the need of the hour to identify the IHC markers specific for GOC and MEC and the conversion rates of these two lesions hitherto.</p>
