摘要

Background

Hydatid illness is a parasitic disease caused by larval forms of Echinococcus granulosus, which is common in certain parts of Eurasia, Africa and South America. The incidence in pregnancy is uncommon and generally asymptomatic.

Method

Here, we report a case of a patient who was operated for large ovarian mass in second trimester of pregnancy and diagnosed with hydatid disease in histopathology report.

Result

It was diagnosed accidentally on routine antenatal imaging in our case. There is pregnancy-induced decrease in cell-mediated immunity which can lead to enlarged cyst formation. It can lead to complications like mechanical compression, torsion, rupture causing spillage and anaphylactic shock and sometimes sepsis jeopardizing maternal and fetal health.

Conclusion

The treatment should be individualized according to presentation and gestation age. Hydatid illness is a parasitic disease caused by larval forms of Echinococcus granulosus, which is common in certain parts of Eurasia, Africa and South America. The incidence in pregnancy is uncommon and generally asymptomatic. It is generally diagnosed accidentally on routine antenatal imaging. There is pregnancy-induced decrease in cell-mediated immunity which can lead to enlarged cyst formation. It can lead to complications like mechanical compression, torsion, rupture causing spillage and anaphylactic shock and sometimes sepsis jeopardizing maternal and fetal health. The treatment should be individualized according to presentation and gestation age. Here, we report a case of a patient who was operated for large ovarian mass in second trimester of pregnancy and diagnosed with hydatid disease in histopathology report.
