摘要

Background

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent hormonal imbalance affecting women in their reproductive years. In PCOS, the dysregulation of aromatase activity leads to an imbalance between androgen and estrogen levels.

Aims and objectives

To study the effect of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol on the aromatase enzymatic activity in PCOS patients.

Material and methods

This was a randomized double-blinded interventional trial carried out on 100 females with PCOS aged between 16 and 35 years from 2023 to 2024. Study medication (a combination of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol) was provided. At the end of 12 weeks, blood samples were again taken from both groups to study aromatase enzyme activity and gene expression.

Results

A notable reduction in aromatase enzyme activity and gene expression was observed after the combination therapy (myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol along with OCPs) in PCOS patients.

Conclusion

This study provides enough evidence to support the role of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol on the aromatase enzyme activity and gene expression revolutionizing the treatment approach in PCOS patients.
