<p>This study reports the mutualistic interaction between the Asian Red weaver ant <i>Oecophylla smaragdina</i> (Fabricius, 1775) Hymenoptera: Formicidae and Treehopper <i>Oxyrhachis unicolor</i> Walker 1851 (Hemiptera: Membracidae) for the first time. The <i>Oxyrhachis unicolor</i> were observed to provide the honeydew to the Asian red weaver ant <i>Oecophylla smaragdina</i>, an essential food source, and ants reciprocated by protecting them from natural enemies. The Asian weaver ant was observed to exhibit tickling behavior toward <i>Oxyrhachis unicolor</i> to trigger the secretion of honeydew. This mutualistic interaction may exhibit the success of coexistence in the ecosystem.</p>

摘要

This study reports the mutualistic interaction between the Asian Red weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius, 1775) Hymenoptera: Formicidae and Treehopper Oxyrhachis unicolor Walker 1851 (Hemiptera: Membracidae) for the first time. The Oxyrhachis unicolor were observed to provide the honeydew to the Asian red weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina, an essential food source, and ants reciprocated by protecting them from natural enemies. The Asian weaver ant was observed to exhibit tickling behavior toward Oxyrhachis unicolor to trigger the secretion of honeydew. This mutualistic interaction may exhibit the success of coexistence in the ecosystem.
