<p><i>Elysia diomedea</i> is a sacoglossan sea slug found on the Pacific coast of the Americas that can sequester chloroplasts from their algal food sources. This is the first study to identify the source of these stolen chloroplasts by DNA barcoding using Illumina next-generation sequencing technology. <i>de novo</i> genome sequencing of a single specimen collected from San Juan de la Costa, Mexico showed that over 50% of its chloroplasts were from as single species of <i>Bryopsis</i>, but it also contained other species of <i>Bryopsis</i> and species from the genera <i>Derbesia</i>, <i>Codium</i>, and <i>Parvocaulis</i>. A second specimen from a previously published short read archive was also examined. In this animal all chloroplasts were from the genus <i>Bryopsis</i> with 70% of chloroplasts from a single species.</p>
