Potassium-solubilizing endophytes: mechanisms and applications in enhancing sustainable agriculture and plant resilience

Bacterial endophytes have emerged as key players in advancing agricultural production and ecological sustainability, particularly in the current context of environmental challenges and the pressing need for sustainable practices. Among these, potassium-solubilizing microbes (KSM) endophytes hold significant potential due to their dual role in supporting plant health and promoting eco-friendly agricultural methods. KSM endophytes contribute to sustainable agriculture by enhancing the availability of potassium, a crucial macronutrient for plant growth and development. Potassium, second only to nitrogen and phosphorus in importance, plays a critical role in key physiological and biochemical processes such as enzyme activation, energy metabolism, starch synthesis, photosynthesis, and sugar metabolism. Additionally, it improves plant resilience to diseases, pests, and abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity. Despite potassium’s abundance in the soil in various forms—mineral, non-exchangeable, exchangeable, and solution only or only a tiny fraction is readily available for plant uptake. KSM endophytes address this limitation by solubilizing inaccessible potassium forms, making them available for plant use. Moreover, these microbes act as natural biocontrol agents, reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They enhance plant growth by solubilizing other essential nutrients like phosphorus and zinc, fixing atmospheric nitrogen, and producing beneficial compounds such as phytohormones, siderophores, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia. Their ability to promote plant health while minimizing the ecological footprint of agricultural practices positions KSM endophytes as a cornerstone of sustainable farming. Integrating KSM endophytes into agricultural systems aligns with the principles of eco-friendly farming, emphasizing the reduction of chemical inputs and the maintenance of soil health. By improving nutrient availability, enhancing crop resilience, and acting as a biocontrol agent, KSM offers a sustainable solution to boosting agricultural productivity while preserving environmental integrity.
