Gratitude at the workplace: a systematic literature review and future research agenda using the TCCM framework
摘要
This systematic literature review examines the growing body of research on gratitude in the workplace and its influence on employee attitudes, behaviors, and organizational outcomes. Synthesizing evidence from 22 peer-reviewed studies, the review highlights gratitude as a key emotional resource that enhances work engagement, intrinsic motivation, psychological well-being, and organizational citizenship behaviors. Drawing on multiple theoretical lenses including Affective Events Theory, Social Exchange Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Broaden-and-Build Theory, the review shows that gratitude frequently mediates the relationship between supportive organizational practices and positive employee outcomes. Research also underscores the reciprocal role of gratitude in customer–employee interactions, where customer appreciation fosters prosocial behavior and improved service performance. Methodologically diverse approaches such as diary studies, SEM, multilevel modeling, and dyadic designs enrich understanding of gratitude dynamics across cultures and industries. Using the TCCM framework, the paper identifies opportunities for future research on collective gratitude, cultural moderators, and long-term intervention effectiveness.
