Enhancement of physico-chemical and biological quality of karonda (Carissa carandas L.) by active modified atmospheric packaging for extended shelf life

Karonda fruit is recommended for anemic and diabetic population being rich in iron and low in sugar. However, its availability in the local market is rare due to very short shelf life, contributing to its underutilized status despite of rich nutritional profile. Hence, the present study is aimed to study the effect of modified atmospheric composition using LDPE on physico-chemical and biological quality of karonda var. Thar Kamal for enhancement of shelf life and marketability. Treatments include passive MAP, vacuum, active MAP I (12% Oxygen & 8% Carbon-dioxide) and II (5% Oxygen & 5% Carbon-dioxide). The results indicated that active MAP I & II significantly increased TSS and reduced physiological weight loss and browning index. MAP I & II better maintained firmness, vitamin C and titratable acidity as well as improved the color of karonda fruits. Maximum shelf life was achieved by active MAP II (46 days) at 5 ± 1 °C and 85 ± 5% RH followed by active MAP I (34 days). Vacuum packaging showed poor results. It can be concluded that MAP with less Oxygen & Carbon-dioxide concentration in consort with cold storage could be an advantageous technological solution to prolong the post-harvest storage quality of berries.
