Developing a Nursing Students’ Sexual Health Intentions Questionnaire using Planned Behavior Theory
摘要
Integrating sexual health assessment into nursing curricula is essential, yet limited research has applied the Theory of Planned Behavior to evaluate nursing students’ intentions to address patients’ sexual health. This study developed and validated a reliable questionnaire grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior to assess nursing students’ intentions to perform sexual health assessment.
MethodsThe development of the Sexual Health Assessment Intention Questionnaire followed three main stages: item generation, a preliminary version, and confirmation of the second version in accordance with established guidelines for TPB-based questionnaire development. During item generation, 42 items were created based on the Theory of Planned Behavior component and a literature review. The first version validation included expert review to establish content and face validity, resulting in a refined 39-item version. The second version validation involved pilot testing and statistical analyses, including an exploratory factor analysis, leading to a final 22-item instrument. Data collection occurred over 18 months, between 2021 and 2022.
ResultsExploratory Factor Analysis identified four factors aligned with the Theory of Planned Behavior components. Principal Component Analysis confirmed the final 22-item structure, with an overlap between the subjective norms and perceived behavioral control components resulting in a single factor. Significant positive correlations were observed among all TPB components. Linear regression analysis showed that attitudes and SN explained 35.4% of the variance in intention to perform SHA (p < .001).
ConclusionsThe findings confirm the reliability and validity of the developed questionnaire for assessing nursing students’ intentions to perform sexual health assessments. The partial alignment of the factor structure with the Theory of Planned Behavior warrants further investigation.
Policy ImplicationsIntegrating sexual health assessment into nursing curricula is recommended to enhance nursing students’ preparedness and confidence. Further research is required to fully explore the factors influencing students’ intentions across all TPB components, which could inform policies to enhance sexual health education in nursing education.
