Introduction <p>In the United States, laws impacting transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people are on the rise. One area targeted by these laws is the bathroom. However, laws are not the only factor impacting bathroom access for TNB people. Institutional design and policy impact access to gender-appropriate bathrooms, which has a number of health and behavioral consequences. The current study aimed to further highlight the negative impacts of lack of affirming bathroom access for TNB adults.</p> Methods <p>A survey was conducted of 163 TNB adults in South Central Appalachia.</p> Results <p>Past bathroom discrimination was linked with psychological distress and bathroom avoidance. This bathroom avoidance was then linked with mental and physical health.</p> Conclusion and Policy Implications <p>Given the impact of bathroom access on TNB people, it is urgent that institutions develop clear and inclusive policies and consider the physical design of their facilities.</p>

Introduction

In the United States, laws impacting transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people are on the rise. One area targeted by these laws is the bathroom. However, laws are not the only factor impacting bathroom access for TNB people. Institutional design and policy impact access to gender-appropriate bathrooms, which has a number of health and behavioral consequences. The current study aimed to further highlight the negative impacts of lack of affirming bathroom access for TNB adults.

Methods

A survey was conducted of 163 TNB adults in South Central Appalachia.

Results

Past bathroom discrimination was linked with psychological distress and bathroom avoidance. This bathroom avoidance was then linked with mental and physical health.

Conclusion and Policy Implications

Given the impact of bathroom access on TNB people, it is urgent that institutions develop clear and inclusive policies and consider the physical design of their facilities.
