Toward networked social identity theory: Reconceptualizing social identity in the digital age
摘要
Social Identity Theory (SIT) has been one of the most influential frameworks in social psychology for understanding social identity formation, group membership dynamics and intergroup behavior since its development in 1979, but its application in the digital age is becoming increasingly problematic. Identity formation, group membership, and intergroup behavior are increasingly mediated by online platforms, which challenge SIT's fundamental tenets. This paper explores a reconceptualized SIT that is modernized for the digital age as as Networked Social Identity Theory (NSIT). Leveraging Hunt's inductive realist approach to theory generation, a series of foundational premises are proposed that may serve as a revised theoretical framework the development of NSIT. Implications to marketing theory and practice are discussed, and future research directions are proposed.
