Seasonal Patterns of Vertebrate Roadkill in the Transitional Zone Between Cerrado Savannas and Northern Pantanal, Brazil

We evaluate when and which vertebrate species are affected by roadkill on two roads between the Cerrado savannas and the Brazilian Pantanal floodplain. During 36 months, we recorded 2,972 carcasses of 206 species, including 14 globally threatened. Mammals and reptiles were the most killed taxonomic groups. Route 2 had higher roadkill rates for all vertebrates and individual groups, except anurans. Seasonal effects were more evident on Route 2, with higher overall mortality rates during the dry season, peaking in August and October. On Route 1, mammals were more affected in the dry season, whereas reptiles and birds roadkill peaked in the rainy season (November). Anuran mortality did not vary seasonally but was concentrated in September. Species composition also differed significantly between seasons, across all groups on Route 1, and for birds on Route 2. The high rates recorded here can be attributed to the high encounter rates estimated in areas with a higher natural abundance of organisms. Our findings corroborate previous studies in Brazil, indicating that mammals are the most severely affected by wildlife-vehicle collisions. Differences in roadkill rates likely result from landscape variation and consequent intraregional differences. Seasonal patterns reflect ecological and physiological needs: during the dry season, mammals disperse more widely in search of water, increasing road encounters; during the rainy season, reptile and bird movements are more closely linked to food availability and reproduction. As both roads are used for tourism, understanding the impacts of vertebrate roadkill on local wildlife and suggesting mitigation is crucial for conservation.
