The Effects of Hydrological Stability on the Hatching Dynamics of Aquatic Invertebrates in Intermittent Ponds

Aquatic invertebrates including zooplanktonic and non-zooplanktonic taxa produce resting stages to persist during drought periods in temporary wetlands. These resting stages provide both resistance for these organisms during drought periods, as well as resilience with the arrival of the first floods. The hydrological stability of temporary wetlands influences the hatching pattern of dormant stages in the invertebrate community. Here, we compare the structure and hatching dynamics of dormant stages of the aquatic invertebrate community of temporary ponds with different levels of hydrological stability. A total of ten temporary ponds were selected - five dune ponds and five grassland ponds. A total of 1,469 invertebrates distributed among 22 taxa emerged from dune and grassland sediments. The total richness of hatchlings did not change between dune and grassland sediments and nor during the weeks of hydration. The differences in habitat characteristics and hydrological stability between dune and grassland ponds may have contributed to the variation in the composition of hatched invertebrates. Furthermore, our results showed that the hatching of dormant stages of the invertebrate community from temporary wetlands is spread throughout the entire surface water period, regardless of pond hydrological stability.
