<p>In the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico, the “popales” (broad-leaved freshwater marshes) are one of the wetlands that could be most affected by rising sea levels, mainly due to increases in salinity and flooding. Given these possible environmental changes, it is essential to know the response of seed germination under different ecological conditions. The objectives of the study were to compare the germination percentages of nine herbaceous or small shrubby species of popal (<i>Cyperus digitatus</i>, <i>Eclipta prostrata</i>, <i>Eleocharis mutata</i>, <i>Fuirena simplex</i>, <i>Ludwigia octovalvis</i>, <i>Pluchea odorata</i>, <i>Pontederia sagittata</i>, <i>Sagittaria lancifolia</i> and <i>Verbesina persicifolia</i>) under different experimental treatments of time, storage, salinity and flooding; and determine whether the type of storage influences the germination percentages of these species. To this end, we designed a factorial experiment with four main factors: storage type (in situ and ex situ), storage time (0, 4, and 8&#xa0;months), salinity (0 and 10 ppt), and flooding (humid and flooded). The treatments combined these factors in a completely randomized design, where each treatment combination was replicated five times. The experiment was carried out in germination chambers under controlled conditions: 14/10&#xa0;h photoperiod (light/dark) and 30&#xa0;°C/20&#xa0;°C thermoperiod. The results showed that most species could germinate after eight months of storage. Therefore, they can form seed banks. Treatments of 10 ppt salinity under humid conditions decreased germination percentages and delayed the onset of germination in most species.</p>
