Enhanced source rock analysis using seismic inversion, well log, and geochemical techniques: a case study from the Kupal oilfield, SW Iran
摘要
This research evaluated the source rock potential of the lower Asmari shale, Pabdeh, Gurpi, and Ilam Formations in the Kupal oilfield, Dezful Embayment, southwest Iran. Geophysical, petrophysical and geochemical methods were employed to quantify Total Organic Carbon (TOC), kerogen types, and depositional environments. Rock-Eval pyrolysis revealed varying source rock potentials: lower Asmari shale (TOC 0.90 wt%, fair potential), Pabdeh Formation (TOC 3.02 wt%, excellent potential), Gurpi Formation (TOC 1.56 wt%, fair to good potential), and Ilam Formation (TOC 1.55 wt%, fair potential). A 3D TOC model was developed using post stack seismic inversion and well log data, achieving a 92% correlation with observed seismic traces via a Model-Based Inversion algorithm. Multi-attribute regression (acoustic impedance, polarity, frequency filters, amplitude envelope) yielded 94% correlation with TOC data, enabling reliable spatial prediction. The Pabdeh Formation was recognized as a high TOC zone, confirming the value of integrated multi-disciplinary analysis.
