Lithium in the brines of Bardaskan, Northeast Iran: implications for resource development

In recent years, there has been growing interest in extracting lithium from brine deposits, primarily due to the rising demand in the global market and the relatively lower production costs of lithium carbonate recovery. With accelerating lithium demand, significant expansion of production capacity and exploration of new reserves are expected in the coming years. The Bardaskan Playa is one of the largest playas in the Middle East, located in northeastern Iran within the Central Iran block. To date, no research has investigated lithium enrichment in the brine of the Bardaskan Playa. In this study, the initial assessment of lithium potential in the Bardaskan Playa was conducted using hydrochemical analysis methods, including the measurement of total dissolved solids (TDS), atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), electrical conductivity (EC), major ions, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The initial findings reveal a lithium concentration of approximately 145 ppm at a depth of 102 m, suggesting notable enrichment. While the area exhibits promising potential, more comprehensive studies are necessary to evaluate the economic feasibility of this potential resource.
