Biostratigraphy of calcareous nannofossils and ostracods from the upper Paleocene-lower Eocene Kolosh Formation at Qaradagh Mountain, Sulaymaniyah Area, Kurdistan Region in Iraq

This work represents the first biostratigraphic investigation of the Qaradagh area. It was carried out on a 370-meter interval of the Kolosh Formation. 47 surface samples were collected and treated for calcareous nannofossil and ostracod studies. Calcareous nannofossil and ostracod assemblages in this section are well-preserved and diverse. 65 species of 29 genera belong to calcareous nannofossils were identified. Two biozones of calcareous nannofossils were established and assigned to the NP9 and NP10 Zones, that attribute to the Late Palaeocene-early Eocene. The calcareous nannofossils recorded in this section include Fasciculithus lillianae, F, tympaniformis, F. involutus, Tribrachiatus lunatus, Rhomboaster cuspis, Zygrhablithus bijugatus subsp. maximus, Sphenolithus moriformis, S. primus, Chiasmolithus consuetus, Coccolithus pelagicus, Neochiastozygus concinnus, Micrantholithus flos, Cruciplacolithus primus, Pontospherea plana, Campylosphaera dela, and Ellipsolithus anadoluensis. Ostracod assemblages provided additional biostratigraphic resolution. In this study, 77 species are identified belong to 40 genera and 8 families such as Krithe echolsae, Dentokrithe sp., Bairdia badiensis, Abyssocypris waleedi, Bythocypris sp., Paracypris eskeri, Cytherella ainshamsina, C. sinaensis, Acanthocythere sp., Paragrenocythere badiensis, Neonesidea iraqensis, and Cypridea accliva. Besides, for the first time, 4 new species of ostracods were recorded in this study, they are: Cytherella qaradaghiensis sp. nov., Cytherella kurdistaniensis sp. nov., Cytheropteron sagirmaiensis sp. nov., and Paracypris koloshiensis sp. nov.
