<p>Buried hill reservoirs are a crucial component of conventional hydrocarbon exploration, constituting a substantial proportion of the discovered reserves in China’s hydrocarbon-bearing basins. The Shuguang buried hill zone in the western sag of the Liaohe depression is abundant in hydrocarbon resources. Nevertheless, the crude oil source remains uncertain, the structural distribution is intricate, and the migration pathways are poorly understood, which significantly impedes exploration efforts. Through oil-source correlation, this study investigates the source strata, migration-accumulation characteristics, and establishes distinct hydrocarbon accumulation models for the Paleozoic-Proterozoic buried hill reservoirs in the Shuguang area, guiding further exploration. oil-source correlation analyses indicate that the hydrocarbons predominantly originate from the Es4 member of the Shahejie Formation in the eastern part of the Chenjia Depression and the deep sections of the low buried hills, and some crude oils have been biodegraded. The unconformities and Himalayan east-dipping normal faults serve as both lateral and vertical migration pathways, facilitating hydrocarbon migration from lower to higher positions along the slope. The primary hydrocarbon accumulation occurred after the Es4 source rocks reached peak generation at the end of the Dongying Formation deposition. Differential accumulation models are established for the low (intra-source and near-source, fault-migration), middle (near-source, fault/unconformity-migration), and high (distal-source, fault/unconformity-migration) buried hill zones, providing guidance for future exploration.</p>
