Petrography and geochemistry of the Early Cambrian phosphorites from district Abbottabad, Pakistan: insights into depositional environment and origin

This article presents the frontier research work on phosphorite deposits in Pakistan. These phosphorite deposits in the Hazara region in district Abbottabad are of sedimentary origin belonging to the Early Cambrian age. The area's geology has been complicated by thrusts and folds which have divided the phosphorite bearing strata into several discrete thrust sheets. The principal occurrence of phosphorite is in the Abbottabad Formation where it is associated with chert, thin beds of shale and dolomite while, to some extent it is associated with siltstone. A petrographic study revealed that the phosphorus is composed mainly of collophane and pellets. The associated dolomite is of secondary origin, probably formed by the alteration of limestone, whereas chert was formed by silica. Field and laboratory studies reveal that these phosphorites were formed by the upwelling currents in the shallow marine shelf environment. Later on, when high energy conditions prevailed, this authigenically formed. Phosphate mud was reworked and pellets were formed. These phosphorites are classified as phosphatic dolomitic limestone related to biogenic origin and mechanical reworking of pre-existing sediments deposited in the shallow marine environment. The chemical analysis of the representative sample shows that the average phosphorus (P2O5) content is around 29.92 wt.%. The obtained grade is adequate to utilize the rock scale commercially to produce phosphate concentrate. However, silica (SiO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) appear to be the main impurity and must be detached. In general use of P2O5 in the fertilizer industry, phosphate rock or its concentrates preferably have levels of 30% (P2O5). The rock seems to belong to the furnace grade and is suitable for producing phosphorous.
