Late Pleistocene sedimentary facies and their diagenetic features along the central eastern coast of Tunisia: inference on depositional environments

The present paper aims to study the sedimentary facies and associated early diagenetic features of the Late Pleistocene carbonate coastal fringe along the Chebba-Mahdia-Monastir coast (East Tunisia) and interpret the depositional environments. The studied Late Pleistocene rock sequence includes two formations, with from bottom to top Rejiche Formation and Chebba Formation. The present work was firstly based on a field study of five geological sections along the considered coast; the study was completed by the examination of 40 thin sections of lithified carbonate under polarizing microscope, and 8 carbonate sands using 5 × to 40 × magnifying lenses. The Rejiche Formation shows a lower unit basically made of calcareous sandstone called “Quartzic unit” associated to early isopachous carbonate cement, that developed in a phreatic marine environment receiving terrigenous detrital inputs during a humid episode. The upper unit consists of a limestone succession devoid of detrital material, called “Carbonate unit” that developed during an arid episode. The upper unit shows at the base oo-bioclastic limestone with early carbonate isopachous fine grained cement, which occurred in a phreatic marine environment, and at the top oolithic limestone with early anisopachous sparry cement referring to vadose marine environment. The Chebba Formation includes three units, the lower unit shows polygenic conglomerates cotemporaneous with a marine regression, the middle unit consists of shells accumulations related to a storms dominated marine transgression; the upper unit consists of continental carbonate crusts containing terrestrial gastropods (Helix).
